The UWin Resource Regeneration Inc. Visit

Our Taiwan-Indonesia Science and Technology Innovation Center (STIC) visited the UWin Resource Regeneration Inc on September 14. The company, specialized in recovery of valuable metals, such as nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and lithium (Li), from the “black powder” of waste lithium-ion batteries, was founded in 2022. The construction of its treatment plant in Taoyuan City was just completed, and is currently under test runs. The design treatment capacity is 1,000 tons of waste lithium-ion batteries per month.

As the world’s most important producer of Ni and Co, Indonesia has attracted numerous international investments on batteries in face of the growing demand of electric vehicles (EV) and energy storage stations. For Taiwanese business owner, it is a precious opportunity to play a key role in the green supply chain of batteries. Thus, the UWin and Tul are going to build two plants with identical treatment processes, yet ten times higher treatment capacity in Bintan and Batam islands in Indonesia in 2024. This visit showed significant potential for Taiwan and Indonesia to work together on circular economy and green production.

Our STIC already signed the MOU with both UWin and Tul Co, respectively, in 2022. We were honored to have in-depth discussion with Chairman, Dr. Kenny Hsu of UWin and General Manager, Mr. Chang of Tul. We focused on how our STIC and Taiwan Tech could collaborate with them, especially on the training of quality engineers and management staff. Thus, Chairmen of both Department of Industrial Management and Mechanical Engineering, and Director of Institute of Smart Manufacturing joined the field trip with Director of STIC.
