Waste from Oil Palms for Eco-Friendly Products

Updated: Dec 20, 2021

LIPI Public Relations, Serpong. Water pollution, rubbish accumulation, and energy constraint are all issues that Indonesia is dealing with. The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has undertaken various studies for eco-friendly products made from natural materials, such as pollutant adsorbents, renewable materials and energy, and natural medical raw materials, through its Research Center for Chemistry. "LIPI's research is currently aimed towards preserving natural resource conservation. We also make adjustments to meet the demands of industry and society "Raden Arthur Ario Lelono, the Acting Head of the Research Center for Chemistry, declared in Serpong on Tuesday (30/4).

Andreas, a LIPI chemical researcher, explained how activated carbon was developed for the decolorization of textile dyes in wastewater. "The coloring agent's adsorbent material is activated carbon from black liquor, which is a byproduct of the bioethanol process of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB)," he added. The wastewater contaminated with textile colours can be clarified using activated carbon.

In terms of renewable materials, Muhammad Ghozali, a chemical researcher, spoke about TKKS' second generation of bioplastics. "When compared to the first generation of bioplastic derived from starches such as cassava and corn, the second generation of bioplastic derived from palm oil empty fruit bunch has better quality such as being water resistant, moisture resistant, non-food item, and its mechanical property is better for packaging," he said. He stated that Indonesian technology is capable of producing this bioplastic.

Meanwhile, bio-oil from oil palm empty fruit bunch waste is being developed as part of renewable energy research. Nino Rinaldi, a LIPI chemical researcher, highlighted that Indonesia's natural resources have a significant potential for development as bio-oil. "Since the issue of importing countries rejecting Indonesian crude palm oil (CPO), Indonesia has the potential to promote oil palm as a bio-oil," he stated. He went on to say that because bio-oil has the same properties as fossil fuels, it may be used as a substitute for gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel.
