Field Trip to CHC Resources Corporation on July 26th

The STIC team visited CHC Resources Corporation located in Xiaogang Dist., Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, on July 26th. CHC Resources Corporation (CHC) was established in 1991 and is a member of the CSC Group. Its stock has been listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange since 1999. In the early phase, CHC was devoted to developing innovative and value-added recycling technologies for the by-products, mainly furnace slag, from CSC’s ironmaking and steelmaking processes. It has expanded its scope of businesses with its expertise, which includes production and sales of blast furnace slag (BFS) powder and granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) cement, and soil ameliorate reagents. CHC's vision is "to become an excellent enterprise in the circular economy, striving for resource sustainability and innovation in value." With the core values of "integrity, respect and sustainability". CHC has developed a corporate culture based on integrity and treat stakeholders and environmental resources with respect, and continued to pursue corporate and environmental resources sustainability.

We are grateful for hospitality and explanation from Imin Wu, General Manager of Environmental Protection Department of China Steel Corporation (CSC), Kuannan Lin, Vice President of CHC, Changchun Zheng, Associate Director, Dengke Xu, Supervisor, Dr. Jiazheng Wu and other staff of CHC. It is noted that Vice President Lin is an alumnus of the Department of Chemical Engineering of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.

Dr. Jiazheng Wu (first from the left) introduced the properties and applications of the BOFS.

“BOFS “graded aggregates are by-products of BOF steelmaking in a wholly integrated steel mill. Their main chemical compositions are CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, etc. The molten slag is cooled and solidified into basic oxygen furnace slag, which then undergoes crushing, magnetic separation, and screening to make BOFS graded aggregates. In application, there are low abrasion, low sodium sulfate bonds, high hardness, and high uniaxial compressive strength in BOFS graded aggregates. They are full of calcium, silicon, iron oxides, etc., all of which are similar to natural gravel. Therefore, it is very effective in road paving, land reclamation and marine ranching applications.

In recent years, the production of nickel in Indonesia has been increasing. Director Winky of Indonesia representative office proposed the possibility to collaborate with CHC Resources Corporation to apply the technology in recycling and reusing to nickel smelter slag, and Vice President Lin Kuanan also told Director Winky that since the technology of company is mainly applied to iron and aluminium smelter, whether it can be applied to nickel ore industry needs further discussion, and he also expects more cooperation in circular economy in the future.
